Photographers and the Law

20080504-16-23-18Caught a post today about the infamous photographer Thomas Hawk being ejected from the San Fransisco Museum of Modern Art and it made me think about my recent run in with art folks at Tennessee Association of Craft Artists (TACA) here in Nashville where I took some photos only to have many of them tell me I was “Not Allowed” to take pictures of their work even though they were being displayed at a public venue. The most annoying was the artist Asia Mathis

20080504-16-23-15Now I am just as much of a defender of artistic rights as the next photographer/creative, but for me this was going to far. These people bring their work out into public places and then try to tell me that they don’t want me to take photos! What a bunch of crap!

20080504-16-22-59Then I posted a few of my shots from this festival in the Capture Music City contest only to have some dork named Lisa York (aka lavendergal) come along and tell me that I had no right to post the photo and that the Capture Music City folks could not publish this because it was someone else’s art! So this means that according to this persons logic that every building, sculpture and publicly viewable form of art is off limits to sharing in a printed item? I don’t think so! To top it off, she is not apparently even a photographer as she has not posted a single image for the contest.

People are so freaking up

People are so freaking up tight. I bet you the only reason they wouldn’t want somebody to take a picture of their at (despite the fact that it was available for public viewing) was that they were scared you might make more money off it then them. I thought Art was about passion… Not about money!

LOL!! Great point! Thanks
